Bound in old calf, rebacked. On the spine, seven gilt fillets. In the second panel, title gilt on red morocco. Blind roll on the edges of the boards. Presented in a custom red-silk clam-shell box with title gilt on burgundy morocco.
Rebacked. Covers slightly bowed forward. Some scratchesto cover. A little wear to fore-corners. Closed tear and missing corner to L2 (a fault in the paper?). Deckle edges present along the lower edges of F5.6. Extreme upper forecorners of L4.5 and L11.12 unopened. Scant mild foxing; overall a tight and clean copy.

The first edition of Mrs. Piozzi’s Anecdotes was published on 26 March 1786; the Gentleman’s Magazine for March of that year records that “on the third morning after the book was published not a copy of it could be obtained” (244). No fewer than four editions were issued in its first year of publication. Some twenty-four verse compositions of Johnson’s were first printed by Mrs. Piozzi.
